Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe Hiking Tips

Gamsgrubenweg

One can walk easily in 30 minutes on this unique alpine panorama trail, high over the impressive glacier landscape of the Pasterze, with ice falls, moraines and glacier tongues. Only practiced mountaineers can continue further into the high-alpine terrain over the glacier (southern Bockkaar Glacier) to the Oberwald Hut or on the Fuscherkarkopf.

Pasterze Glacier Trail

A secured alpine ascent (walking time about 30 minutes on the descent, around one hour on the ascent) leads directly on to the Pasterze Glacier. It is also possible to use the glacier railway, at cost. The Pasterze Trail, with its “Stoamandl'n” (stone figures), leads further from the Pasterze over the Margaritzen Reservoir to the Glockner House.

Swarovski Observatory Panorama Trail

This trail leads from the Visitors’ Centre above the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, in about ten minutes walking time, to the unique Wilhelm Swarovski Observatory. From here one can enjoy spectacular views with the most modern optical devices into the high-mountain world of glaciers around the highest mountain in Austria. But the numerous marmots, ibex and even the mountaineers climbing the Grossglockner, can also be closely observed. From the Observatory, one continues easily to the Franz-Josefs House and the coach parking area (walking time about 30 minutes).

Tip: a hiking and road map of the area along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, complemented with beautiful pictures and information, is available at our Glockner shops.
