The Villach Alpine Road runs for about sixteen kilometres from Villach-Möltschach (550m) up on to the Dobratsch (1,732m), but not completely to the summit (2,167m) - because that should be conquered on foot. Fantastic views are repetedly offered along the road to the city of Villach, the Julian Alps and the striking south flank of the Dobratsch, which is considered the largest landslide region in the eastern Alps.

Not only the experience of the drive on the mountain road, but also taking a deep breath in the healthy mountain air, are the rewards of this excursion. Numerous rest areas invite one to stop for a snack in the heart of nature.

Especially worth seeing and experiencing:

P 2: A rest area for views of the city and lakes (862m): An impressive vantage point offering views over the city of Villach and the surrounding lakes.
P 5: Wurzelboden rest area (1,307m): Together with the view, the opportunity for a cosy picnic is the attraction here.
P 6: Alpengarten rest area (1,403m): Over 900 species of alpine flowers are presented to visitors in an area of 10,000 m² (admission fee). From here is the path leading to the "Rote Wand" vantage-point platform where the steep rock-faces show their special appeal.
P 11: Himmelsblick (1,732m): One continues on foot at the end of the Villach Alpine Road. The hike to the peak of the Dobratsch (2,167m, about two hours´walk) is also perfectly suitable for families.

Hiking tips: The Dobratsch offers hiking trails of the most various degrees of difficulty to the leisure walker as well as practiced alpinists.
